Painting and Restoration by Gordon Morrow

Before & After Pictures

Anyone can slap on a coat of paint, but it takes years of experience to learn the skills and tricks which produce a beautiful, lasting paint job. Professional painting is actually about 85% preparation work—relatively little time is spent applying paint!

Here is an example of an interior restoration of a Wallingford Craftsman era room.

Office Before Remodel

After 40 years of use, Dick's office needed more than a good clean-up. It needed to be restored! Old papers were thrown out, dirty book shelves taken down, the ancient grass cloth stripped off, walls repaired and fresh paint applied to walls, doors and windows. This job took two guys about a week of work to complete.

The walls are lathe and plaster. After 80 years and several earthquakes, they needed a lot of patching. We sanded off the patching mud using a palm sander attached to canister vacuum to suck up the dust. The window sashes are sanded using a Fein triangle sander and 80-grit sandpaper. De-glossing shiny paint is essential prior to priming and painting to ensure good paint adhesion and appearance. We used two coats of Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo, the best trim paint made.

Gordon is shown on stilts painting crown molding along the ceiling. Stilts are much faster than using a ladder.

Finally we get to paint! Two coats of PVC primer and two coats of latex egg-shell-gloss paint on the walls. And at right is the new office look. Much brighter and more modern looking. Office After Renovation
